Because of the recent downswing, I’ve decided to re read Zen and the Art of Poker.   It’s helped me keep a clear head going into these sessions.  I wish I could say that I am running well now, but I’m not.  I think over 4k hands I am up a grand total of 12 bucks.   I’ll be posting hands shortly, but I know a couple of the ones that I got stacked on today were

77 vs JJ on a 2 7 J board

KK vs QQ on a 8 9 10 board

AA vs KK on an X  X X X k board

I also got 22 vs 33 on a A 2 7 3 J board, but thanks to me (incorrectly) putting him on a flush I didn’t lose as much as you may think.

The one huge thing I am noticing in my games is that players are just flat not getting it in thin vs me.  I am basically always seeing a hand when all the money goes in.  I got it in with A8 today on a A 9 8 flop, other guy had 9 8.   I remember a time (last oct.) where Ax gets it in there.

Anyways, the games are by no stretch unbeatable; I just need to keep getting better.  Including rakeback I probably have about $1900 on cake and $450 on stars.  I was going to use my stars money to play tournaments with, but I can’t figure out if I hate tournies or not.  If I do, I may just get that money on full tilt or something.

I really miss 25 tabling the turbo sngs and just harvesting shit loads of pts.  I am sure that if i were on a downswing in sngs I would be bitching about how nice cash games were, but still.  If this downswing continues for a prolongued period of time, then I just might go back to playing like 200 turbo sngs a day again.  There was something methodical about them that I really liked.

So, with the start of the new year I planned to dedicate myself to poker and really put in the quality time to not only build a bank roll, but also learn the game.  Well, about 5 days in I am pleased to announce the worst run of cards in my young poker career.  I, literally, cannot win a hand to save my life.  After getting too mad, I take some time away from the table to refresh and then I sit down again… and continue to lose.  It’s been one constant stream of people giving aces no action… unless they’re flopping sets or 2 pair. People giving kings no action unless they have aces.

I even had a boat run into a straight flush… one that required both of villain’s cards.  What the fuck is this? James Bond Casino Royal?  So, I’ve lost about $700 playing 50nl.  I decided to sit down in a tournament on poker stars.  Surely,  I would not continue to run so badly.  Well, hand 4 I get KK and the dude who’s gone all in on the first 3 hands rr me all in with 33.  River is obviously a 3 and my jig is up.  I am sitting down in one more tournament.  It’s a $12 180 man turbo. These things really do suck dick.  If I were an insane sicko I would play like 100 of these day.  There is that much value in them.

So a couple of things:

1. Matt, care to stake me again at 50nl?  I’ll read all the books and watch all the cardrunner vids and play goot.

2. I feel marginally better after bitching about my downswing.  It isn’t even so much the money.  I’ve gone on larger downswings in the past; last summer I lost 1k 25 tabling sngs and last november I lost $790 in one day!  Still, the length of time and the cruelty of it has begun to anger me.  Hopefully,  I’ll take down this turbo tourny for $595 and start running better.  Ultimately, I’d like to have about 10k on stars, cake, ft, ub and absolute.  Then, I can grind out 200nl and play in some of the moderate online tournaments.

It’s hard to say my play has been good.  I have to imagine I’ve spewed a decent amount, but then again what do you call it when you keep running into the top of your opponents’ ranges?  Eh fuck it.   I am gonna take a couple days off and just chill.

And that’s all she wrote.  If I spotted the error or decided that a hand was standard and not particularly exceptional i did not post it… sigh I’ll post the A2cc hand.  Just tell me when I should get off of it.

After this hand i was left wondering how in the fuck it got so bad.  Mistake I think came from not factoring in that there was shorty who was gonna price me into a real shitty spot.  If I could play it again, would have noticed the shorty, folded and would be at like 4100 right now instead of 4030.

continuing to play 100nl.  I am not running particularly well, but I am still up about 90 bucks since moving up limits.  I can tell that I am getting better, but I’ve been making about 1 big fuck up per 500 hands or so.  I will be posting hands shortly.

Because the first session at 100nl was not on my computer, I only have the most recent 1700 hands at 100nl.  Stats are as follows:

hands: 1742 down $100.60 -2.89bb/100 and i’ve made $89 of rake.  I plan to get in another couple hours of play tonight.  I am still 4 tabling, and will probably continue to do so until I not only feel comfortable at 100nl, but I my pt stats are solid (3bb/100 or so).

Especially when just starting at a new limit.  Here are the hands.

Here, I had a pretty loose table image.  I thought he could easily have a weaker king… also at 50nl you always stack off here.   With looser players at 100 I would imagine it’d be the same.

I think I should have checked the river here.  Looking back at it, I can’t imagine what this player would call me with that I beat.  I mean, villain was extremely passive and floated a lot of flops with a lot of bad draws before this.

Hand against the same player:

So, after losing so many big hands, I actually did pick up some things that I can add to my game.  It seems hollow to say after blowing 1.5bi over my stop limit.  I was waiting to roll through the blinds when some of those hands stack offs happened.

Here’s a hand a played against a reg where I think I made a very solid read:

MP ($107.30)
CO ($100)
Hero (Button) ($113.80)
SB ($101.40)
BB ($82.05)
UTG ($87.75)

That’s it.   If I feel up to it, I’ll probably play more tonight because, besides the QQ hand, I am almost positive the rest of those are standard.  And, really, I dont think the QQ is a definite mistake, but, hell, it may be.

final stats on session: 125 hands -$400

While there are several question hands, the vast majority of my first 100nl session was uneventful. I was up as much as 80 and down as much as 20.  Then, as I was about to close out my session, the following hand occurred:

This certainly helped the cause turning a +$20 session into a +$150 session.

MP ($105)
CO ($141)
Hero (Button) ($153.40)
SB ($129.10)
BB ($192.15)
UTG ($102)

Preflop: Hero is Button with
3 folds, Hero raises to $3, 1 fold, BB calls $2

Flop: ($6.50)  (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $6, BB raises to $24.50, Hero raises to $60, BB raises to $189.15 (All-In), Hero calls $90.40 (All-In)

Turn: ($307.30)  (2 players, 2 all-in)

River: ($307.30)  (2 players, 2 all-in)

Total pot: $307.30 | Rake: $3

Results in white below:
Hero had 8, 5 (full house, eights over fives).
BB mucked J, Q (two pair, Queens and eights).
Outcome: Hero won $304.3

Some other interesting spots:

Button ($104.65)
SB ($37.75)
Hero (BB) ($102)
UTG ($98)
MP ($117.50)
CO ($97.90)

Preflop: Hero is BB with

Flop: ($20.50)  (2 players)
Hero bets $12, 1 fold

Total pot: $20.50 | Rake: $1

Then, against the same guy a couple hands later I played this hand:

SB ($120.75)
Hero (BB) ($144.75)
UTG ($98)
MP ($95.15)
Button ($98.30)

Preflop: Hero is BB with
1 fold, MP calls $1, 1 fold, SB raises to $3, Hero raises to $11, 1 fold, SB calls $8

Flop: ($23)  (2 players)
Hero checks, SB bets $16, Hero raises to $40, 1 fold

Total pot: $55 | Rake: $2

My thinking here was that he was going to come after me on the flop regardless of what I did.  If I led, he was going to raise me, and if I checked, he would bet at me.  I really didn’t think he would call a check raise with anything worse that a king, however, so I went with the c/r bluff.

The plays I was making slightly more often were the following:

Button ($100)
Hero (SB) ($177.55)
BB ($90.50)
UTG ($96.95)
MP ($95.20)

After watching the sbrugby cardrunners video it really hit home that right decisions are what the game of poker is all about… that and volume.  If you make right decisions over 8-10k hands, then you’re just going to win. It’s that simple.  I recently put in a 876 hand session and lost $91. Really, I am totally fine with it because I ran horribly.  Seriously: I probably lost 4.5-5 bi from bad beats.  I was able to climb out of the hole by getting 100bb from the J7 maniac with a decent Ace and with stacking a dude with A10 on an 1083 board. blind v blind he had 85.

I know that its a pain in the ass to look at hands on this blog, but it’ll have to do for this one:
